What's Happening in Lahore

Oh meray Allah.. We need Your Help desperately!

The afternoon suicide bombing news hadn't sunk in properly yet, that we have just now heard of five (Yes 5!) back to back blasts that have hit Iqbal Town, in the last 3 hours (as I write this) .. people are being advised to stay at home, and the city is gripped by an obvious wave of panick and paranoia. What is happening out there? (6 blasts now, but the authorities say the sixth was caused by a transformer exploding)

Today afternoon:
In the fifth attack in Pakistan this week, and the second in Lahore, two nearly simultaneous suicide bombers detonated explosives in a bazaar in the country's cultural capital earlier today, as people were sitting down before the main Friday prayers began (AP, Reuters, BBC, Geo, NYT, WSJ). At least 45 were killed, including about ten Pakistani soldiers, and nearly 100 were wounded in the strikes which appeared to target a pair of Army vehicles. Eight attacks have left more than 170 dead in Lahore in the last year (AFP). There have not yet been any claims of responsibility.

We're all spectators. Waiting and watching. Watching the devastation, and waiting for who and what it strikes next. The country is ripped with explosions. Our 'earthquakes' occur by the hour. There is nobody who can solve this mystery -- solve the puzzle, and answer the question: Why?

Why now?

Why not 10 years before?

Why now that we are the most loyal allies in the 'War on Terror' ??

Why now that the country has offered free reign to not only foreign military forces, but also their private security agencies?

And in this entire sorry tale, who is being killed?

Innocent people and our armed forces. Brigadiers, generals, jawans, right and left, here and there... what are we... ants?

Uni,
I disagree with you on that. Our alliance with foreign allies started only after terrorist links were established with our home-grown Talibans. No matter what we say, the entire world considers them responsible for 9/11 and there's no solid proof to refute that!

And in our own yester-years, we had a whole lot of Jihadi organizations having a free license to do whatsoever. All because back then, they made a fine proxy for our army. Unfortunately, or fortunately, policy changed and we have to dump them if we have to stand in the commity of nations. But since they're not a bunch of ill-trained personnel who'd go away easily, we today face the backlash.

No matter where we point fingers, it's we ourselves who are flawed. And much more than those 'foreign' elements. And we need to correct ourselves. Intolerance, the dominatnt element everywhere in our society, be that religious freedom or course books, need be shunned.

It's sad to note we have come to a point where blasts only intrigue us to the point of asking the number of casualties and just that! We need a shift of social perspective which seems not to be happening at all.

The entire world also thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and supported the war. Only a minority tried to oppose it.

The entire world thought The US had no role in the starting of the Vietnam war. Check the de-classified CIA files now.

So if you believe something to be true, based on what the world thinks, then it doesn't really have a basis in fact.

Also, this 9/ll thing -- it has too many elements to refute the involvement Talibans only, and no inside help.

This 'jehadi' element, once again, had the foreign element involved. Not us alone. It's never us alone...

I never said we're perfect. I simply say that we need to point fingers in the right directions. Ourselves, yes, but we should recognize the enemy within. Haven't you seen how the suicide bombing activity has increased manifold from Mush era ? When did we hear about this kind of bombings (and so frequently) before 2001?

And now, even more frequently, since the army attacks on our northern areas, and the drones. Even more more frequently since the Blackwater thing broke out. If this isn't a hint, then what is? You can choose to close your eyes, and believe in the goodness of mankind (which, btw, isn't a bad thing to aim for -- it's just not going to achieve something till you recognize the enemy who isnt from among us)...

Intolerance, the dominatnt element everywhere in our society, be that religious freedom or course books, need be shunned.

Eh.. what's that got to do with this discussion? Please elaborate.

Thank you for your input. I value your opinion. It just sucks when we choose (we literally choose) to ignore what's happening right beneath our noses, and fear the ridicule of the likes of NFP etc.

PS: This really should have been another post :P
